Our history

In Wengen since 1912 – from Fritz Molitor via Karl Molitor to Elisabeth and Beat von Allmen.

01

1912 – Fritz Molitor and the beginnings

It all begins with Fritz Molitor, the founder: in 1912 he rents the building in the village that is still Molitor’s home today.

  1. 1912

Fritz Molitor, father of Karl Molitor, rents the building that still houses the shop today: a small store for travel goods and leather ware.

  2. 1915

Fritz Molitor opens a shoemaker’s workshop. Two shoemakers make mountain boots, sports shoes and made-to-measure shoes.

  3. 1922

The family opens a second shop in Mürren, but gives it up again three years later.

02

Karl Molitor – Wengen, ski racing and the Lauberhorn

With Karl Molitor, the next generation shapes the house – and ski racing. To this day he is the record winner at the Lauberhorn.

  1. 1920

Karl Molitor is born – on the top floor of today’s shop building.

  2. 1939

Karl Molitor wins the Lauberhorn downhill for the first time. With 6 downhill, 2 slalom and 3 combined victories – 11 in total – he is still regarded as the Lauberhorn’s record winner.

  3. 1948

At the Olympic Games in St. Moritz Karl Molitor wins silver (combined) and bronze (downhill) and ends his racing career. In the same year he marries Antoinette Meyer.

  4. 1950

Karl Molitor takes over as race director of the Lauberhorn races – for 42 years.

  5. 1990

Karl Molitor is inducted into the Ski Hall of Fame.

  6. 2014

Karl Molitor dies at the age of 94.

Pioneering spirit – ski boot, buckle and cable

The shoemaker’s workshop becomes a ski boot factory. With buckle and cable closures, Molitor ski boots break new ground.

  1. 1965

A licence agreement with Byson in Nara (Japan) allows the legendary Molitor buckle ski boots to be made under the Molitor name.

  2. 1977

Competition becomes too strong: the boot factory in Wengen closes.

The Molitor Girl has been with us since 1967. The motif from Molitor’s advertising is still our signature today.

From travel goods to sport and fashion

Travel goods and leather ware, shoemaking, a ski boot factory, a sports shop: the business has changed again and again – yet stayed in the same building in the village. Today Molitor Sport is the sports and fashion store in the heart of Wengen, with ski rental, a service workshop and its own products.

The story continues

In 2012, Elisabeth and Beat von Allmen – both long-standing members of the team – take over Molitor Sport Wengen.

It opens a new chapter in a story that began in the same village a century earlier.

A lot has changed since 1912. The mountains are still here. Wengen is still here. And so is our ambition not simply to sell products, but to engage with them, improve them and find the right solution for our customers.

Today, Molitor combines tradition with modern technology, personal advice and carefully chosen products for winter and summer.

For us, the pioneering spirit of those early days isn’t history for the shop window.

It is our ambition for tomorrow.

Timeless Quality – since 1912
